What does it take to have a successful Culinary Career?

Jobs in the Culinary field involve a fairly logical progression. Although many chef careers can take some wild twists and turns, a young chef should expect to start from the bottom and work all the way up the chain.

If you’ve ever wondered exactly how that chain breaks down, you’ll appreciate this infographic from Chef Help (http://www.chefhelp.co.uk/) which starts at Commis and works up the kitchen family tree to Executive Chef.

The Family Tree Of The Kitchen

A good culinary school course can provide you with a solid foundation in chef skills and an understanding of the industry. At B.H.M.S., we offer a BA Degree in Culinary Arts, which is a 3-year fast-track program recognized by the American Culinary Federation Foundation, and by The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in the UK.  The program develops students' contemporary skills in food preparation and presentation, à la carte cuisine, pastry and desserts and kitchen management through hands-on training and classroom learning. Over the course of 3 years, students acquire all the fundamental skills necessary to work in the world's finest dining establishments in one of the fastest growing industries. The program consists of three stages - Diploma, Higher Diploma and finally, the Bachelor Degree. Alternatively, the first two years of the program can be taken separately and used as additional diploma qualifications.

Practical, hands-on experience is often the most useful and frequently the most valued by a potential employer. Internships not only give you an opportunity to get a taste of life in a particular kitchen, but also find out where your skills lie. Each year of the BA program comprises of 6 months in school and 6 months paid internship in one of the many renowned Swiss dining establishments.

Building a great career will take time and it’s important to give yourself the flexibility to work your way gradually up the ladder without skipping any of these valuable stages. Each one is essential, providing you with the skills and experience you need to move on to the next stage of your career.
